Birth
James Percival Sutton was born on the 31st March 1899 in South Africa.
Service in the Great War
He joined the South African Infantry and served as a Private, Service No. 14189 and went to fight in the Great War, he was killed at Kemmel Hill on the 2nd May 1918 aged just 19 years. His grave / memorial is at Ref. panel 15-16 & 16A, Cemetry Ypres ( Menin Gate ) Memorial. He was the son of William Ashley and Amaranth Philothea Sutton of Benoni South Africa. He also served in the German East African Campaign.
Birthday Book
He was given a birthday book which has a lot of his school friends names and birth dates in it , it was given to Ethne Sutton (Spence ) his niece in 1929 by his mother Amaranth and she passed it on to her daughter Virginia, who still has it.His service medal (or Death Penny as it became known ) was given to his other niece Dulce who in turn passed it on to her daughter Jeanne who lives in Springs, South Africa.
