Template:Needsources Template:TranslationNeeded Hertog van Aquitanië. Heette eerst Pierre, neemt de naam Willem aan nadat hij zijn halfbroer Willem VI de Dikke opvolgt in 1039. Zijn moeder had een belangrijke rol in het uitschakelen van zijn halfbroers en was regent tot 1044. Verder hertog van Gascogne, graaf van Poitiers, Bordeaux en Agen, lekeabt van Saint-Hilaire.
Rond 1053 speelt de scheiding van zijn moeder en haar tweede man Godfried IV van Anjou. Godfried weigert de bezittingen uit de bruidsschat te retourneren en dat is oorzaak van voortdurend conflict. Daarbij zal Willem ook sterven, bij het beleg van Saumur door dysenterie. Bestrijdt ook zijn neef Bernard van Armagnac in de Gascogne.
